Verstek Suid Afrika offisieel in Resessie

The correct term is "Boer nationalists" and not "right-wingers", as the Institute for Security Studies labels them. Boers are not an (extremist) element on the spectrum of the South African professional party-political comedy. Boers do not wish to be part of this "rainbow spectrum", nor do they consider themselves bound in conscience by a constitution, laws, rules and statutes made on their behalf without any form of consultation with them or consent by them. If and when they do obey these oppressive laws, they do it out of a higher conscience, and out of respect for the semblance of the order of things. The Boers have a right to resist an oppressive constitution and oppressive laws, as they believe that actions borne from coercion can never be interpreted as the giving of consent!

"Crime expands according to our willingness to put up with it." - Farber, Barry J.

Governments usually respond to recessions by adopting expansionary macroeconomic policies, such as increasing money supply, increasing government spending and decreasing taxation.

DA blames ANC for economic woes

BLOG: The ANC’s dangerous spending plan

President Jacob Zuma’s first Cabinet lekgotla was rattled yesterday when officials confirmed that the economy had contracted again in the first quarter of the year. This is the country’s first recession in 17 years.

While the ruling ANC issued a statement saying it planned to spend its way out of trouble — by accelerating spending on infrastructure and public works — some government officials questioned whether the party could still afford the big-ticket items that were key to its election manifesto.

A senior official at the lekgotla said the recession news came as a shock to new ministers mapping out the government’s plans.

“All our plans rest on the performance of the economy. With economic data that shows we are in a recession, it means some of our plans will have to be tweaked a bit.

“What is compounding the issue is the threat of strikes and more companies shedding jobs. Our task has just become even more difficult,” said the official.

The government already faces the threat of a public-sector strike unless it agrees to the pay demands of doctors, nurses and other civil servants.

Labour federation Cosatu said the implications of the recession were “frightening”. But it would hold the Zuma government to its election promises.

“With recession now upon us, the government must stick to the promises made during the elections,” said Cosatu spokesman Patrick Craven.

When the ANC launched its manifesto in January, economist Iraj Abedian warned that items such as increased social spending and job creation through public works would require economic growth of 6 percent.

Yesterday, Statistics South Africa said gross domestic product growth slowed by a shocking -6.4 percent in the first quarter, from last quarter’s -1.8 percent contraction.

This is the worst figure since the third quarter of 1984 when GDP was at -6.5 percent. It is the first technical recession in South Africa since the fourth quarter of 1992.

Soaring job losses will take their toll on consumers as businesses go into survival mode and try to cut costs through retrenchments.

Sasfin economist David Shapiro said yesterday: “The danger of the recession for the man on the street is that he stands to lose his job.

“We already have socio-economic problems like high unemployment and poverty; that’s our soft underbelly. A recession could lead to social unrest,” he said.

Shapiro advised consumers, who make up about 60 percent of South Africa’s economy, to spend only the cash they had and not take on any more debt.

“We’re not saying go into a hole now, but the ultimate aim is to reduce your debt so you can have a little more money to spend,” he said. “Set aside non-essential spending, make the car last a little longer, paint your house next year, not this year.”

Shapiro advised against selling your house now because prices were set to drop further this year.

Fixing the interest rate on mortgages was also not a good idea because interest rates were expected to fall further and banks would not fix the interest on a mortgage at these low levels, but higher.

Shapiro expects interest rates to come down by another one or two percentage points by the end of the year.

The Reserve Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee starts its two-day meeting today and will announce its interest-rate decision tomorrow.

Governor Tito Mboweni is expected to announce another 100-basis-point cut in the repo rate to 7.5 percent, putting more money back in consumers’ pockets.

The ANC said yesterday it had received a clear mandate from the electorate to respond decisively to the global crisis.

“In the period ahead, the ANC will accelerate and expand its investment in public infrastructure. It will step up a massive programme on expanded public works linked to infra structure and meeting social needs,” it said.

Economists expect two more quarters of negative growth before the economy improves.

The mining and quarrying and manufacturing sub-sectors in particular were responsible for the bulk of the GDP weakness, contributing -1.7 and -3.3 percentage points respectively to the -6.4 percent drop.

"Both these sectors are highly dependant on foreign demand — confirming the negative spillover effects of the global recessionary environment on the South African economy," said Fanie Joubert, an economist at the Efficient Group.

Ek twyfel regtig of Shapiro dit so gestel het.
